Voltage testers

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a voltage tester, a socket tester, and a fuse finder?

A voltage tester detects voltage and, depending on the model, continuity, phase sequence, or residual current device (RCD) function; a socket tester checks the wiring of a socket; a fuse finder identifies the corresponding circuit breaker for each socket. For verification of disconnection, the two-pole voltage tester is the relevant device. The PAN Socket-Test-2 is suitable for quick socket checks, and the PAN Circuit Finder is used for circuit identification.

  • Can PANCONTROL voltage testers also measure DC voltage, for example in PV systems?

Yes, selected PANCONTROL voltage testers also measure DC voltage. The PAN SolarCheck 1500V is specifically designed for photovoltaic applications and tests DC voltages up to 1500 V DC and AC voltages up to 1000 V AC. Depending on the model, the PAN Volttester 400, PAN MV-1000A, and PAN MV-1000AD also detect AC and DC voltages. Non-contact voltage testers, on the other hand, only work with AC voltage fields.

  • Which measurement category do voltage testers require for work in switchgear and on the power grid?

For measurements within fixed building installations, at least CAT III is required; for measurements at the service entrance, on meter installations, or in areas close to the grid, CAT IV is required. Voltage and continuity testers such as the PAN MV-1000A, PAN MV-1000AD, PAN SolarCheck 1500V, or PAN Allrounder 200AD meet CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V standards and thus cover typical professional applications in electrical installation, maintenance, and industry.

  • What distinguishes the PAN Volttester 400 from the PAN MV-1000A, PAN MV-1000AD, PAN SolarCheck 1500V or PAN Allrounder 200AD?

The PAN Volttester 400 is a simple 2-pole voltage tester for quick AC/DC voltage testing up to 400 V in low-voltage installations. The PAN MV-1000A and PAN MV-1000AD are advanced voltage and continuity testers up to 1000 V AC/DC and are suitable for switchgear, three-phase systems, and maintenance work. They offer additional features such as phase rotation indicator, audible continuity test, single-pole phase test, and 30 mA residual current device (RCD) test.

For photovoltaic applications, the PAN SolarCheck 1500V is the specialized solution: It is designed for DC voltage testing up to 1500 V and AC voltage testing up to 1000 V, making it suitable for PV strings and solar power systems. The PAN Allrounder 200AD combines voltage testing, multimeter functions, and a current clamp in a single device. It is suitable for PV and electrical applications with measuring ranges up to 1500 V DC, 1000 V AC, and 200 A AC/DC.

For simple voltage testing, the PAN Volttester 400 is sufficient. For standard-compliant testing in switchgear and three-phase environments, the PAN MV-1000A or PAN MV-1000AD are the more comprehensive choice. For PV systems, the PAN SolarCheck 1500V is preferable; for flexible service and maintenance operations with additional current measurement, the PAN Allrounder 200AD is a good option.
